Wreck Diver
Tuition: $75

COURSE ORIENTATION / CHARTER DATES:

October 23 (class and quarry dive) and 30 (offshore)

Our Wreck Diver course introduces divers to the wonderfully exciting world of wreck diving. And most of the time, the North Carolina coast is pretty much the only place we teach this program. A typical course utilizes home study, one full briefing session (going over wreck orientation, dive planning, emergency procedures, etc.), and 2 wreck dives completed under the direct supervision of an instructor.

Here's how we typically structure the combined Deep / Wreck program when taken in North Carolina.

For wrecks below 60 feet, we require that the Deep Diver course be completed prior to taking the Wreck Diver course. If you would like to earn these specialties offshore North Carolina, hit the above link to see how we do it. If you want to earn a wreck diver specialty on one of our trips, the course structure will depend on the environment and your instructor will have all the details.

After completion of our North Carolina Deep and Wreck program, divers will know the proper protocol utilized by dive charter operators like Aquatic Safaris, Discovery Diving, Olympus Dive Charters, etc. for diving the wrecks of North Carolina, down to a max depth of 130'.

Time Commitment: Approximately two hours at home to complete the home study system, one 2-hour classroom session, one day at the quarry to review your dive skills and complete a simluated boat dive, and one full day offshore charter in which two wreck dives shall be completed under instructional supervision.

Required Equipment: Personal snorkeling gear and scuba equipment with functioning BCD auto-inflator and alternate air source, PSI/depth gauges and a computer, two dive cylinders, appropriate exposure suit, compass, slate, personal surface marking device (scuba tuba), whistle, and dive knife or shears.

Required Experience Level: Carolina wreck diving is some of the most exciting diving on the planet. BUT - it is done at the deep limit of the sport diving range, and it is 30 to 50 miles offshore, and it is in the volatile weather conditions found in the open Atlantic Ocean. So it is only prudent to have some non-negotiable rules in place. Here's ours:

  • Charters are $140 per day and include a night's dorm accommodation at Discovery Diving in Beaufort the night prior to the dive.
  • We do not determine what wreck we will be diving until we're heading out the inlet and checking sea conditions, but we will generally be diving the 100 to 130' depth curve (Papoose, Atlas, U-352, etc.).
  • All charter participants MUST HAVE an ADVANCED OPEN WATER RATING (AOW) or equivalent rating (any agency) and at least 2 previously logged dives deeper than 100 feet offshore North Carolina to get on the charter- OR be enrolled in our Deep/Wreck specialty courses.
  • Charter is booked with full payment. In the event of a cancellation, no refunds are given unless the charter spot is re-sold or the dive is cancelled due to weather.

Medical Waiver: If it's been more than a year since you were in the water, and/or it's your first time taking a course from Gypsy Divers, a Medical History Form is required. If you have any "Yes" answers, it may be necessary for you to get a Physicians Approval before signing up.. Here's the link to the forms: Medical History Form and Physicians Guidelines. Please call us if you have any questions.
